The houses of Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury’s housing stock is unusually layered: medieval and Tudor timber frames inside the river loop, Georgian townhouses on St John’s Hill and Swan Hill, substantial Victorian and Edwardian villas in Belle Vue, Kingsland and Copthorne, and farmhouses and cottages in the villages beyond. Much of the centre sits within a conservation area, and listed buildings are common — which makes the difference between a standard extension drawing and a considered whole-house strategy very real here.

A design note for Shrewsbury

Belle Vue and Kingsland villas often hide their best opportunity at the back: long plans with under-used service rooms that can be reworked without extending. The published “Small changes, big impact” project — a Victorian farmhouse near Shrewsbury — proved exactly that logic in the national press.

Architecture and interiors, decided together

Because I design both, decisions in Shrewsbury houses get made once — plan, light, kitchen, storage, materials and lighting resolved as a single scheme rather than handed between an architect and a decorator six months apart.
