Architect & interior designer in Much Wenlock

Much Wenlock is small, ancient and disproportionately rich in listed buildings — a town where any intervention is a conversation with history. I work with owners here and in the Wenlock Edge villages.

The houses of Much Wenlock

Medieval burgage plots, the priory’s legacy, limestone and timber frames: Wenlock houses are often deep, low and dark by modern taste, with thick walls and small openings that resist casual alteration. The surrounding Edge carries farmhouses and quarry-era cottages with their own robust character.

A design note for Much Wenlock

In thick-walled limestone houses, light is the project: window reveals, internal openings, and the disciplined use of glazed doors can transform rooms that a conventional extension would only bypass. Build last; borrow light first.

Architecture and interiors, decided together

The wall you move decides the joinery that fits against it; the window you add decides the colour that works beneath it. Because I design both, decisions in Much Wenlock houses get made once — plan, light, kitchen, storage, materials and lighting resolved as a single scheme rather than handed between an architect and a decorator six months apart.

Questions from Much Wenlock owners
Everything here is listed. Where do we start?

With a feasibility study that takes consent seriously from day one — what the building will allow, what officers will support, and which moves aren’t worth the fight.

Can old houses take contemporary interiors?

Yes, when the architecture leads: honest materials and confident colour sit beautifully in ancient rooms, as my published work shows.
