Architect & interior designer in Newport

Newport’s long, wide High Street — with St Nicholas’s church sitting on an island in the middle of it — is one of Shropshire’s most distinctive townscapes. I work with owners of its Georgian houses and the larger properties in the surrounding parishes.

The houses of Newport

Fire and prosperity gave Newport a coherent run of Georgian and early Victorian frontages, with burgage plots running back behind them and canal and mere landscapes beyond towards Aqualate. On the town’s edges sit substantial detached houses and farmhouses, many with more land than plan to work with.

Where the value usually sits in Newport

The characteristic Newport problem is depth: a handsome three-window frontage attached to a plan that gets darker with every step back. Rooflights, internal glazing and a rethought stair usually do more here than any rear addition, and they leave the street elevation exactly as it should be.

Architecture and interiors, decided together

The wall you move decides the joinery that fits against it; the window you add decides the colour that works beneath it. Because I design both, decisions in Newport houses get made once — plan, light, kitchen, storage, materials and lighting resolved as a single scheme rather than handed between an architect and a decorator six months apart.

Questions from Newport owners
Do you cover Newport and the surrounding villages?

Yes — Newport, Edgmond, Lilleshall and the villages around them are within regular working range.

Our Georgian house is dark at the back. Is that fixable?

Almost always, and rarely by extending. Borrowed light, a reorganised stair and openings in the right places transform deep plans.

Can architecture and interiors be handled together?

Yes — that is my practice’s defining appointment, covering plans, planning, technical design, kitchens and full interiors as one scheme.
